First Time On The Slopes

:

What to Know and What Mistakes to Avoid

Aug 1, 2025

Trying skiing or snowboarding for the first time is an exciting experience. The mountains offer stunning views, fresh air, and a whole new way to enjoy winter. But for beginners, there are also many things that can feel confusing or even overwhelming. Here’s what you should know before your first day on the slopes – and some common mistakes to avoid.

1. Choosing the Right Gear

One of the biggest beginner mistakes is showing up without proper equipment. You don’t need to buy everything new – in fact, renting gear in ski resorts is a great option, especially if you’re just starting. Rental shops will help you pick the right ski length, boots that fit, and a helmet (which is essential).

Tip: Wear proper ski socks (not multiple layers of thick socks) to keep your feet warm without cutting circulation.

2. Dress for the Weather

Layering is key. Wear a thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer (like fleece or wool), and a waterproof outer shell. Avoid cotton as it gets wet and cold quickly. Don’t forget gloves, a hat or helmet liner, and goggles. Goggles are especially important on snowy or sunny days to protect your eyes.

Beginner mistake: Wearing jeans or everyday winter jackets. They soak through quickly and can make your day miserable.

3. Take a Lesson

It might be tempting to let a friend teach you, but qualified instructors know how to get you started safely and with the right techniques. Just one or two lessons can make a huge difference in your confidence and help you avoid bad habits.

4. Know the Ski Etiquette

Just like roads, ski slopes have rules:

  • The skier in front has the right of way – it’s your job to avoid them.

  • Always look uphill before you start again.

  • Don’t stop in the middle of the slope or just below a hill where others can’t see you.

  • On lifts, move quickly so you don’t block others.

Respecting these rules makes skiing safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

5. Start Small

It’s normal to want to try the big slopes right away, but starting on green (easy) runs helps you build confidence. Progressing too fast is one of the most common beginner mistakes – and it often leads to injuries.

6. Be Prepared for Weather Changes

Ski lifts sometimes close due to strong winds, heavy snowfall, or poor visibility. If you ski far away from the main resort area, always have a “Plan B” for how to get back. Check lift status boards and apps before heading out, and don’t leave it too late in the day to return.

7. Don’t Push Yourself Too Hard

Skiing is physically demanding. Beginners often underestimate how quickly fatigue sets in, and tired legs lead to more falls and a higher risk of injury. Take regular breaks, drink water, and listen to your body.

8. Enjoy the Experience

Your first day is about learning and having fun, not about speed or distance. Celebrate small progress – maybe your first turn or making it down a slope without falling. Skiing is a journey, and every expert started where you are.

In short: Rent gear if you don’t own it, dress properly in layers, take at least one lesson, follow slope etiquette, and don’t overestimate your stamina. With the right preparation and attitude, your first time on the slopes will be both safe and unforgettable.
